Research Administration Staff


Robert J. Buckley
Director

Robert J. Buckley came to Hunter College in 1969 and has served as Director of Research Administration since 1977. In the ensuing years, he has witnessed the growth of grant activity from averages of fewer than 100 proposals and less than $3 million per year to the current annual levels of more than 500 proposals and $40 million. In consultation with the Provost, the Director of Research Administration provides institutional authorization for grant and contract proposals.  With the assistance of staff, Bob prepares an annual report of grant activities, provides statistical reports, and issues a monthly newsletter during the academic year. Bob is member of the National Council of University Research Administrators, the Society of Research Administrators, and the Association of University Technology Managers, and chairs the CUNY Council of Grants Officers.

Carolynn Julien
Associate Director and IRB Coordinator

Carolynn Julien has been with the Office of Research Administration since 1988. Her background and expertise in computer science have been assets to numerous initiatives of the Office of Research Administration, including electronic transmission of proposals and office management tools. Carolynn is the Coordinator of the Institutional Review Board (IRB; also known as the Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects from Research Risks). Carolynn is a member of the National Council of University Research Administrators and has earned the titles of Certified IRB Professional (CIP) from the Council of Certified IRB Professionals of the Applied Research Ethics National Association, and Certified IRB Manager from the National Association of IRB Managers.

Barbara Medina-Garcia
Assistant Director for Project Personnel

Barbara Medina joined the staff of the Office of Research Administration in 1981. She is the office manager and the office expert on personnel, including hiring procedures, personnel vacancy notices, and immigration and visa regulations. Barbara oversees the processing of more than 3,000 personnel actions each year in paper and electronic format, and advises principal investigators and staff members on electronic and paper time sheets. Barbara manages the office's part-time staff. 

Annmarie Rivera
Assistant Director for Sponsored Projects

Annmarie has been with the Office of Research Administration since 1990. She works with principal investigators in the preparation and submission of the budgets and is the office liaison for the PSC-CUNY Research Award Program and other Hunter College grant programs.  Annmarie handles grant-related tuition and fees and serves as staff to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.

Amanda Howard
IRB Specialist II

Working as a student assistant with the Office of Research Administration during her junior and senior years, soon after graduation Amanda took a position as a research assistant at a local hospital.  We are please she has returned to Hunter an an IRB Specialist in 2008.  She meets individually with many faculty and students to discuss IRB protocol forms and the review process.

Karlene Roberts
Administrative Assistant for Project Personnel

Karlene began work in Research Administration in 2002.  She works with the Assistant Director for Project Personnel in reviewing hiring papers for persons employed on Hunter's grants and contracts.  Karlene explains identification and documentation requirements and instructs new employees on time sheet processing.

Sarah Leon
Administrative Assistant for Regulatory Affairs

Ms. Leon joined the IRB staff in March 2006 as a Research Assistant and assumed the role of Administrative Assistant for Regulatory Affairs in May 2009, after graduating from Hunter College.  She is responsible for the layout and design of the IRB Newsletter, preparing and ensuring delivery of IRB meeting materials for IRB members, setup for the monthly IRB meetings.  Ms. Leon also handles calls and questions and performs other IRB administrative functions.


Part-time Staff:
Our part-time staff members are drawn from the ranks of Hunter College students. Our current part-time staff members are  Royell Sullivan, Wankairys Decena Janet Echeverry, Rimi Dhar and Milana Levitana.
